Hello Andrew and Sheila,
Wellcome back!
Obviosuly... you made the right choice to come back to Symi and the island will be more than happy to have you back! There are plenty of choices (over and above EasyJet - who also fly to Rhodes from Liverpool this summer). I know an indirect flight (via Athens) is not ideal but there are plenty of bargains to be found with
Olympic and
Aegean and (depending on ferry timetables which are not known yet) you could even avoid staying on Rhodes overnight. The best (and possibly the cheapest) option may be to get the night flight out with Olympic or Aegean connecting in Athens for the first flight out to Rhodes (which gets you to Rhodes as early as 6:30am so you could even get one of the day-trip boats if there is nothing else).
Of course there are other bargains to be found with
charter flights (direct to Rhodes), though most of these mean an overnight on Rhodes (though you may be able to get the night big boat from Rhodes to Piraeus via Symi if it carries on running on Saturdays).
ps. Don't worry about "all the unpleasantness with the other lot", as they are dying a not-so-slow (and well-deserved) death.
